PROFILE OF HONOURABLE JUSTICE JUMMAI HANNATU YAKUBU SANKEY, OFR Honourable Justice Jummai Hannatu Yakubu Sankey, OFR, an indigene of Du, Jos South Local Government, Plateau State was born on 16th January, 1959 in Kaduna, Kaduna State. His Lordship attended Latimer Nursery School, London from 1963 to 1964; St. Anne’s Primary Boarding School, Kaduna, 1965-1969; Queen Amina College, Kaduna, 1970-1974; St. Louis College, Jos, Plateau State, 1974-1976; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, 1976-1979, and the Nigerian Law School, Lagos 1979-1980. Honourable Justice Jummai Hannatu Sankey, OFR started her legal career as a Legal Aid Counsel in Zaria with the Legal Aid Council as part of the mandatory National Youth Service Scheme from 1980-1981. His Lordship then joined the services of the Kaduna State Ministry of Justice as a State Counsel Grade 2 and rose to Senior State Counsel from 1981-1989. She later joined the Plateau State Judiciary as Senior Magistrate Grade 1 & 2 in 1989, Chief Magistrate Grade 2, 1989-1992; Chief Magistrate Grade 1 1992-1993; Deputy Chief Registrar/ Director Personnel Management, Plateau State Judiciary, 1992-1993. In 1993, His Lordship was appointed Judge of the High Court of Plateau State 1993. She was Chairman, Robbery & Firearms Tribunal, Plateau State, 1997-1999; and was elevated to the Court of Appeal where she served variously as Presiding Justice of the Yola, Akure, Makurdi, Gombe, Awka and Owerri Divisions from 2006-2024. Honourable Justice Hannatu Sankey, OFR had served in various capacities as Presiding Justice and Member of various Governorship, National & State Assemblies Election Appeal Panels, and Chairman of various Judicial Commissions of Inquiry into various communal disturbances in Plateau State. His Lordship was also President, National Association of Women Judges (NAWJN) 2021-2023; Member, Body of Benchers, 2018 to date; Member, International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ); Member, Commonwealth Association of Magistrates & Judges, among others. Honourable Justice Hannatu Sankey was sworn-in as Justice of the Supreme Court on 26th February, 2024.
