About Amiru Sanusi OFR

           Hon. Mr. Justice Amiru Sanusi OFR Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Was born on 2nd of February 1950 in Funtua, Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State of Nigeria.

          An indigene of Katsina State, I attended Gudundi Elementary School, Funtua from 1957 to 1960 where I obtain Elementary School Certificate. In 1961 I proceeded to Aya Primary School Funtua for my Primary School education and passed out with Primary School Leaving Certificate in 1963. In 1964 I gained admission into Government Secondary School Funtua (now Government College, Funtua) for my Secondary School education. On passing out in 1968 I obtained Secondary School Certificate and General Certificate of Education (GCE).

          After the completion of my secondary school education, I started work with the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Zaria in 1969 as clerical officer where I worked briefly, before gaining employment as Clerical Officer with Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Kaduna in then former North Central State of Nigeria in August 1970. In 1972 I gained admission into the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria to study Diploma in Law on leave without pay. In 1974, July, I completed the Diploma in law course with good grade as a result of which I gained automatic and direct admission to proceed with LLB degree course in September 1974 which I concluded and passed out in 1977 with 2nd Class Lower division grade.

          Having completed and obtained LLB degree, I resumed duty to High Court of Justice, Kaduna State on transfer from the Ministry of Agriculture & Natural Resources and got advancement from Assistant Registrar to Higher Registrar in 1977 before proceeding to the Nigerian Law School, Lagos in the same 1977. I concluded and passed the Barrister at Law course in 1978 and was called to Nigeria Bar in July 1978. I then proceeded for my one year NYSC compulsory service and was posted to the former Imo State of Nigeria now comprising Imo, Abia States and part of the present Ebonyi State. While on NYSC service I worked with to the Ministry of Justice Owerri as pupil State Counsel and I served for six months before being deployed to the Legal Aid Council where I served for the remaining six months as Legal Aid counsel.

          On completing the one year compulsory national service, I returned to my employer in September 1979 and was up graded to the rank of Magistrate Grade II and then ran through the rank up to the rank of Senior Magistrate Grade I. In 1981 I was seconded to the Niger River Basin Development Authority Ilorin, Kwara State as Principal Assistant Secretary (Legal) and headed the Legal Section of the Authority up to 1983 when I was deseconded to the Kaduna State Judiciary on advancement to the rank of Ag. Chief Magistrate II and was later promoted up to the rank of substantive Chief Magistrate Grade I in 1987.

          On the creation of Katsina State which was excised from the defunct Kaduna State, I was deployed to the Katsina State Ministry of Justice as Director of Public Prosecution, the post I held until 1989 when I became the first Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice of Katsina State. In early 1990, I was sworn in as High Court Judge in Katsina State judiciary. While serving as a High Court Judge I was also sworn in as Chairman Robbery and Firearms Tribunal in Katsina. I continued to double both as a High Court Judge and Chairman of Robbery and Firearms Tribunal, until November, 1998 when I was appointed as Justice of Court of Appeal. While in the Court of Appeal, I served in about eight divisions of that court, namely Lagos, Jos, Kaduna, Enugu, and later as Presiding Justice of Benin, Sokoto, Enugu and Kaduna (two times) and Abuja divisions through up to May, 2015.

          On 14th May, 2015 I was elevated and sworn-in as Justice of Supreme Court of Nigeria, the post I am still occupying at the moment.

          It needs to be stated that while serving as a Judge of Katsina State High Court and as Justice of the Court of Appeal, I served in various commissions of Inquiry either as member or chairman of such commissions.   Similarly, I attended several professional courses in Nigeria and abroad and have obtained many certificates in such courses or trainings. I also obtained Post Graduate Diploma in Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution from GIMPA University, Ghana which is affiliated to the Institute of Alternative Dispute Resolution of Nigeria, Abuja in the year 2016. I have also been appointed as a Life Bencher for more than five years.
